A NEW NODE

We perceive the site as a typical line city centre. A new node on a string of city centres of different quality. The success of this new centre depends a great deal on its ability to become a powerful magnet on this line. Therefore it needs to develop a personality that generates strong possibilities for development.

1. INTERWEAVE / GET OFF MY BACK!

On the scale of the site the centre area needs to use the activity of the centre in a way that does not only benefit the main road but gives chances to the whole site, bringing urban energy to the new town.

Our first intervention is to widen the influence of this road by changing the road system from a generic octagonal system to a space defining hexagonal one. This way the residential hinterland gets connected to the main road, and the centre program (commercial, cultural, educational and recreational) gets brought deeper in the new city.

This interweaving through street pattern gives better chances for a comfortably layered Qingpu New Town.

2. THE LANDSCAPE CENTER

Once we have extended the influence zone of the road we have a series of plots that stretch over the road. These plots we perceive as a sequence of programmed urban landscapes. Together offering a visually and programmatically intense city centre.

The plots are developed as urban landscapes, housing different strong centre programs as individual urban magnets on a scenic string. These magnets are a combination of landscape and program. Trees and towers, mall and hill, an entertainment bridge, water and culture, etc.

Combined this sequence of the landscapes is a road movie representing the image of Qingpu New City. At the same time it is a diverse centre of bordering urban landscapes challenging the visitor to explore. This new centre does not embody a style, more so it is a mix if urban energies wrapped in a leisurely landscape packaging.

3. WATER STRUCTURE

By subtracting the ‘island’ site from its generic urban grid we set the first step in recognising the water town landscape as a historic and cultural network worth preserving. The site now gets defined by it natural borders.

In the site itself the existing waterways are used as the attractive borders of the centre area of the site. Where the main road inevitably serves the centre as backbone to the car traffic, the water does so for the pedestrian use.

The cultural centre of the site is placed on the intersection of the north and south waterways in the site. It forms a ‘water square’ that accommodates the political and cultural buildings of the city centre.

In the less central areas of the site the existing waterways are used as routes for pedestrians and bicycles.

No need to say that the keeping the water structure can also be read as a sustainable action. Both the water buffering capacity and the refraining from moving the water holding bodies are important sustainable deeds.

4. TRANSGRID; PUBLIC AND PRIVATE OUTDOOR QUALITY

The new grid uses the very same exits from the main road as did the proposed road system.

In contrast to the projected ortagonal street pattern, this hexagonal street pattern keeps the views of the inside the new town, creating a much more intimate city sphere. No longer is the street the domain of transport only.

The space inside the grid blocks is relatively big, as to be able to fit large programs and create leisurely / ecological green interior spaces.

SLOW NETWORK

The plots have a pre-described system of slow traffic through the plots. This allows pedestrian traffic to form its own network throughout the site. For this network only the entry points are given, the architect / developers can choose the connection according to the needs of the plan. As a result a lively, multi shaped and green network emerges that supports local scale and provides popular alternative to car traffic.

The pedestrian network uses the centre functions to bridge between the north and south side of the new town.

5. ARCHITECURAL ATTITUDE.

It is imperative that the architectural language supports the landscape- leisurely direction of the plan. All the different building clusters in the center have a clear landscape connection. Some through green facades, other through no facade.
